Who this notice covers
Gaza by the Numbers is an independent public-data project. In this notice, “we” and “us” mean the project operator. For privacy questions or requests, contact us at [email protected].
Information handled when you visit
The dashboard retrieves public source data directly from Tech for Palestine. To make repeat visits faster and to keep the dashboard usable when that source is briefly unavailable, the site stores a copy of that public data in your browser's local storage. The site fetches fresh data when the copy is more than 24 hours old, but keeps the older copy, marked as out of date, as a fallback if the source cannot be reached; each successful fetch replaces it. The copy stays on your device until it is replaced or you clear it through your browser's site-data controls, and the site does not send it back to Gaza by the Numbers.
If you arrive through a link with campaign tags, such as utm_source, the site keeps those tags in your browser's session storage until you close the tab. They are only attached to measurement events if measurement is activated and you allow it.
Like any website request, the services involved in delivering this site and the public data source may receive ordinary technical information such as your IP address, browser type, request time, and the page that made the request. We do not ask visitors to create accounts or submit personal information to use the data dashboard.
Site analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages and referring sites people use, so we can tell whether the site is useful. Cloudflare, which delivers the site, adds a small script to each page that reports each page view to Cloudflare, along with technical details such as the page address, referring site, browser type, and page-load timing. According to Cloudflare, Web Analytics does not use cookies or local storage and does not fingerprint visitors. It runs without asking for a choice because it does not identify or follow individual visitors. Cloudflare's handling of this information is described in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
Optional measurement
Google Analytics and Google Ads identifiers are not currently configured, so those measurement tags do not load on the live site. If we activate them, the site will ask before loading them. Choosing “Use essential only” keeps them off; choosing “Allow measurement” permits aggregate event measurement such as a research-link click, share action, or newsletter call-to-action click.
The measurement implementation is designed not to send email addresses, free-form responses, or other directly identifying text in those events. A measurement choice, if one is shown, is stored in your browser and can be cleared through your browser's site-data controls.
Newsletter signup
Some pages include a newsletter signup form provided by Beehiiv. When you subscribe, the information you enter, such as your email address and any optional fields shown in the form, is used to manage and send the Gaza by the Numbers newsletter. Please do not put sensitive information in a signup form.
Beehiiv processes subscriber information for this project as a service provider in most cases, and its own services may also process technical information to operate and secure the form. Read the Beehiiv Privacy Policy for its practices, including its handling of international transfers. Beehiiv-hosted services may process information in the United States and other countries.
How we use and share information
We use the limited information described above to operate the site, provide the newsletter you request, answer privacy requests, and protect the service from abuse. We do not sell or rent subscriber email addresses. We share newsletter signup information with Beehiiv to operate the subscription, page-view information is processed by Cloudflare as described above, and we may disclose information when required by law or needed to protect the site, its readers, or others.
Retention and your choices
The browser copy of public data described above is replaced each time the site fetches fresh data, and you can remove it at any time through your browser's site-data controls. You can unsubscribe from newsletter emails at any time using the link in an email. You can also ask us to access, correct, or delete personal information associated with your subscription by emailing [email protected]. We may need to verify a request before acting on it and may retain limited information where required for legal, security, or recordkeeping reasons.
Third-party services and browser signals
This notice does not cover third-party websites or services, including Tech for Palestine, Cloudflare, and Beehiiv. Their practices apply when you interact with them. The site does not currently configure Google Analytics or Google Ads. It does not respond to browser Do Not Track signals; if measurement is activated in the future, use the site choice control and your browser controls to manage that measurement.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when the site or its data practices change. Material changes will be posted on this page with a revised “Last updated” date.
